Boy Scouts of America

About Boy Scouts of America
A Scout, Boy Scout, Girl Scout, or, in some countries, a Pathfinder is a participant in the Scout Movement, usually aged 10–18 years, who engages in learning scoutcraft and outdoor and other special interest activities. Some Scout organizations have split this wide age group development span into junior and senior programs. Scouts are often organized into patrols of about 6–8 Scouts under a patrol leader with a number of patrols forming a larger troop under the guidance of one or more adult leaders or Scoutmasters. Many troops are affiliated with local, national and international organizations. Some Scout organizations have special interest programs such as Air Scouts, Sea Scouts, high adventure, Scout bands, mounted scouts and cyclist Scouts. In the United States there were around 6 million scouts in 2011.

Discontinued Boy Scout badges include beef production, blacksmithing, nut culture, hog and pork production, and taxidermy. Hog and pork production was discontinued in 1958 — interestingly, the beef scouts kept going.

It's a lengthy process. Basically, they dropped the badge largely because no one was really achieving it. The invention badge, it's part of the American Boy Scout specifically. There were 57 original merit badges that you could get, like archery and swimming and so on. invention was part of it. That launched in 1911 and they took it out by 1914 and only 10 scouts in that time managed to get it which I think is a very high number.

Theodore went up on stage in front of his parents and all these like hundreds and hundreds of people applause. Teddy Roosevelt just went, what on earth is this boy doing here? Then the Boy Scout leader jumped on stage and dragged him off stage to save embarrassment. He said from that point onwards, you always had a crippling fear of public appearances. I find it a bit weird that the president's reaction on saying there were nine medals and ten people dressed as Boy Scouts, they would assume the tenth person is an imposter.

If you've started the process trying to get it, you can, yeah, finish it. The inventions have not survived. Most of them have not survived. We don't know what was patented. We do know one by Graham Thomas Smallwood, which was a Scouts uniform with a removable sleeve to stop your Boy Scout badge arm getting dirty. I think it's a great idea. It's really good. It's, yeah, it's not just that.
