Coliseum

About Coliseum
The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, just east of the Roman Forum. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is the largest standing amphitheatre in the world. Construction began under the Emperor Vespasian in 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian. The three emperors who were patrons of the work are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named the Flavian Amphitheatre by later classicists and archaeologists for its association with their family name (Flavius).

There was the Pertauris, which the sources we have suggest was a giant seesaw, and we think it was used at kind of half time in the Coliseum. There's a huge seesaw, and you'd have two opponents competing on either side, and one would jump onto it, and it would fling the other one up in the air.

Other times Coliseum came up
Also the name Coliseum comes from word for big. It's not because that's big. It's because it's next to another statue. which happened to be big. Really? Yeah. There was a huge statue of Nero nearby. That was so big that the area became known as the big statue place. That's great. The Pantheon burnt down twice. The pantheon, the inscription on it reads, Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius' consul for the third time, built this when actually he died about 100 years before it was built because he built the initial one, but it just kept burning down.

There was a lot going on at the Coliseum. It was a mad shit for about 500 years. You couldn't write every single thing down every day. I'm sorry, if I walked out at the end of an evening at the Coliseum and I saw Gladiators fighting, I'm not saying that. I'm going, do anyone see the fucking sausage dogs? No, but there was so much more weird stuff than that.

It was a primitive MC Hammer cult, basically. That's what he's based on. My favourite place in Rome is Amethraic Temple. It is by far the coolest site. Forget everything else. Forget the Coliseum. About five minutes from the Coliseum, there's a basilica of San Clement. Have you guys been to it? No. I think I might have been. Maybe. It's an 11th century church. You go in 11th century church.

If you went back in time when you saw one, you would think it was a sausage dog. Exactly. The thing is, we genuinely don't know what they thought. The archaeologists have been crawling in the sewers under the Coliseum for a year. They spent a year crawling in the mud on their stomachs. They found lots of stuff. They found seven coins, which does not feel like a good return on investment.
