Grand National

About Grand National
The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Aintree, Merseyside, England, near Liverpool. First run in 1839 as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, it is a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 2+1⁄2 furlongs, with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. It is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £1 million in 2017. An event that is prominent in British culture, the race is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.

A very young jockey called Sean Bowen raced in the Grand National a couple of years ago. As a child, he was allergic to horses — he would get eczema anytime he went near a horse — but then he grew out of it, and he would practice by sitting on a sofa and whipping it.

Other times Grand National came up
It's very exciting and suspenseful and there are different kinds of achievement as well. I think that would be really exciting to watch. I think if they had the Grand National and they also had some dots riding competition at the same time, it would be a hell of a lot more popular. There's another good bet which is another kind of crafty bit, a bit like Andy's, where someone was outwitted.

They have to make sure that the ice is thick enough because it's an amateur contest and professionals and amateurs take part and so loads and loads of people take part in it and then pretty much the rest of the country all cool and sick and watch it on television and apparently that's like a thing. It's like they stay home, like watch it. It's a bit like I know the Grand National here or any massive event. I have heard of that but I think global warming means it hasn't happened for a while.

It feels like it was a bit of a whole silly season the 1930s apart from the Great Depression and the rise of fascism yeah apart from that there was a chance to have a bit of a breather after the First World War. When the reporter from the Daily Dispatch went over to see this supposed mongoose again didn't see it but heard it talking apparently the mongoose gave him a tip for the Grand National which is quite good.
