Rabbit Island
About Rabbit Island
Ōkunoshima is a small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is considered to be part of the city of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is accessible by ferry from Tadanoumi and Ōmishima. It was originally used by the Imperial Japanese Army, with a poison gas factory being built in 1925, that would be crucial in Japan's chemical warfare carried out in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. After World War II, Ōkunoshima was redeveloped as a park, with domestic rabbits being let loose on the island. The rabbits would quickly reproduce, with the current number estimated to be in the thousands. The large rabbit population would lead to Ōkunoshima being nicknamed Usagi Shima . Due to a lack of predators on the island, the rabbits have been habituated.
On the show
What we think actually happened is there are a lot of school kids nearby and they put some rabbits on there. Then the rabbits did what rabbits do and became more and more and more rabbits. Now, because it's known as Rabbit Island, kids will just come and put their rabbit on there because it's where rabbits live. It's almost advertised as this wonderful place where rabbits roam free.
